RPMI Medium 1640 Basic (with L-glut)
Product Details
RPMI-1640 medium is named after its research and development location (Roswell Park Memorial Institute) and is an improved version of McCoy's 5A medium. It was originally used for suspension or monolayer culture of human leukemia cells. Later, it was found that this medium is also suitable for culturing HeLa, Jurkat, MCF-7, PC12, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (B and T lymphocytes), astrocytes, and cancer cells.
Product Advantages
The reason why RPMI1640 medium has unique effects compared to other media is that it contains the reducing agent glutathione and high concentrations of vitamins. RPMI1640 medium contains biotin, vitamin B12, and PABA, which are not present in Eagle's MEM and DMEM. In addition, the medium also contains high concentrations of the vitamins inositol and choline. RPMI1640 medium does not contain proteins, lipids, or growth factors. Therefore, RPMI1640 medium requires additives, usually 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). RPMI1640 medium uses a sodium bicarbonate buffering system (2.0 g/L) and therefore requires a 5-10% CO2 environment to maintain physiological pH.
